East Jersey State Prison is located near the border separating Rahway from Woodbridge Township. Although the prison is not technically located in Rahway, many people mistakenly believe that it is because the facility used to be named Rahway State Prison and the prison still has a mailing address in Rahway. The prison is featured in several Hollywood films, including Ocean’s Eleven. Since East Jersey State Prison is a maximum-security prison, it houses many people who have been convicted of serious, felony-level crimes.
Today, Rahway is a bustling city with a popular downtown area that includes retail stores, restaurants, a hotel, a theatre, an art gallery, and the Union County Performing Arts Center.
