More About Rahway, New Jersey

Rahway is a city located in the southern section of Union County, NJ. It became an official city in 1858 when it was incorporated from parts of Rahway Township and Woodbridge Township. Rahway’s Municipal Court is very busy and sees a lot of criminal and traffic activity primarily because of its location to surrounding cities and the fact that U.S. Rt. 1 and Rt. 27 traverse the municipality. Motorists in Rahway travel along more than 73 miles of roadways, including U.S. Route 1/9 and Route 27. You can also connect to the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike less than two miles outside of Rahway. The City of Rahway has a population of about 27,000 and is part of the New York metropolitan area, being only about 15 miles from Manhattan. Rahway is bordered to the Northwest by Clark, to the Northeast by Linden and to the South by Woodbridge Township in Middlesex County. East Jersey State Prison is located near the border separating Rahway from Woodbridge Township. Although the prison is not technically located in Rahway, many people mistakenly believe that it is because the facility used to be named Rahway State Prison and the prison still has a mailing address in Rahway. The prison is featured in several Hollywood films, including Ocean’s Eleven. Since East Jersey State Prison is a maximum-security prison, it houses many people who have been convicted of serious, felony-level crimes.

Today, Rahway is a bustling city with a popular downtown area that includes retail stores, restaurants, a hotel, a theatre, an art gallery, and the Union County Performing Arts Center. The city actually has a fairly large park system which includes about ten parks. The most famous park is Rahway River Park, which is where the Rahway River runs through the city and this maintained by Union County.
